Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I think Frank makes a bunch of really solid comments.

The lack of salt is what kind of surprised me. Two hotter races that I ran this year both had salt packets on the course. I brought some with me, but they ended up getting wet when I doused my head (you know..."with seven cups of water at each aid station"). At one point I found myself licking my phone because salt got on it. Totally awesome.

Frank makes a lot of good points, but his last suggestion pissed me off: "turn off the clock."

The decision to turn off the clock at the 35K checkpoint last Sunday discouraged a number of runners who were doing just fine and could have finished the race.

Otherwise I agree with everything Frank wrote in the article--he made a lot of useful suggestions for runners of all experience levels.

Thanks for posting Frank's column. He's always been rational and sensible. That Sunday was a perfect storm and anyone who tried it and lived to tell about it deserves a medal.

I just wish Chicago marathon knew this stuff. there solution add 1 extra cup of water every 4 water stops for each person. only 1 cup of gataraid per person at each stop. if first half all took 2 then no wonder the second half had nothing. its not the first halfs fault its the marathons.

if you finish the course I beleive you are a offical finisher regardless of your time but I could be wrong. still does not mater since you know you are a fininisher/. those of us who were forced off the course are just screwed.
